Workshop on low energy climate control in museums and archives

This program indicates the topics covered, the timing is not guaranteed.

Program

Monday 4 october

13.00 Welcome (PKL)

13:20 Introduction

The whole course summarised in 20 minutes. (TP)

14.00 Climate control in museums and stores

Architecture and the importance of the building envelope. (PKL)

15.00 Standards for the museum environment

The loose relationship between the environmental standards and the evidence for damage promoted by the environment. (TP)

16.00 Exercise 1: Design a museum building. First session

Introduction to the design tools: Using the psychrometric chart; plot the outside climate in relation to the desired inside climate; Identify what needs to be done (humidify/cool/heat/dehumidify) to reconcile the two; Consider both daily and annual cycles of outdoor climate. (PKL)

17.00 Radiation effects

Case story: St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, Egypt (TP). Not delivered, maybe later if there is time.

18.00 End of session. Social arrangement

Tuesday 5 october

09:00 Basic building physics

Principles of thermal and moisture storage. Solar gain and radiation loss from roofs. Alternative mechanical systems to supplement passive control : Heat pumps, dehumidifiers, solar panels, wind power (PKL)

10.00 The use of building materials to moderate the RH

Relative humidity buffering in places with significant air leakage (TP)

11.00 Exercise 1: Design a museum building. Second session

Design the building envelope, structure and materials. Prepare presentation

12:00 Lunch

13.00 Exercise 1: Design a museum building. Third session

Group presentation to the whole class

14.00 Walk to the National Gallery

16.00 The Museum climate

Lecture by Marion Mecklenburg, Senior research scientist at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, USA.

17.00 End of session

Wednesday 6 october

Excursion, see separate program

Thursday 7 october

Case story: New storage facilities at the Open Air Museum in Sibiu, Romania (MRY)

14.00 Exercise 2: Design a new Museum for Agriculture. Second session

16:00 After care

How to measure environmental parameters. The importance of calibration. How to store, retrieve and display climate data. (TP) (This lecture may be quite different, according to how the day evolves).

17.00 End of session

Friday 8 october
